Applications close Dec. 31, 2021 due to limited funding
Merrillville, IN – Due to limited funds remaining, the last day to apply to the Lake County Emergency Rental Assistance program is Dec. 31, 2021. Currently, renters financially impacted by the COVID-19 global pandemic can apply for twelve months of financial assistance through the program.
“This program helped decrease evictions and prevent homelessness for thousands of tenants who were negatively affected by the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Bill Trowbridge, CEO of Regional Care Group, the network administrator for Geminus Corporation. “And we are grateful to our partners for helping us provide much needed community assistance and relief.”
Partners assisting with the program include Lake County township trustees, municipal housing authorities and local nonprofits, including Lake Area United Way, Northwest Indiana Community Action, Catholic Charities, Legacy Foundation, The Salvation Army and other community outreach programs.
Geminus and Lake County partner organizations will continue to process emergency rental assistance applications received by Dec. 31. Renters in need of assistance after Dec. 31 may be eligible to use the State of Indiana’s emergency rental assistance program. For more information about Indiana’s program, renters are encouraged to visit IndianaHousingNow.org.
In early 2021, the Lake County Redevelopment Commission awarded Geminus Corporation the contract to administer the emergency rental assistance grant. The U.S. Treasury Emergency Rental Assistance program funds the grant.
Geminus distributed $13 million by September 2021. Later, the Lake County program received more funds, allowing Geminus to provide an additional $27.45 million in assistance—making the cumulative total for available funds to qualified applicants $40,450,000.
To date, more than $21 million has been distributed to 3,060 Lake County tenants in need of emergency rental assistance. Nearly 6,000 Lake County residents have applied for rental and utility assistance.
